Black Friday Predictions for 2008 from GottaDeal.com, Web's Largest Black Friday Site

Having covered Black Friday extensively for the past five years, we at GottaDeal.com are in a better position than pretty much anyone else to offer predictions for this year. Over the years we've noticed trends in the deals offered by the major retailers and can offer a glimpse into what we believe will be the 2008 Black Friday deals and hot items.
HDTVs:
While HDTVs have been popular Black Friday items in the past few years, we expect that this holiday season will be the tipping point for HDTV purchases by the average consumer. Prices have dropped this year more than any previous year, and with the digital TV transition happening in a few months, a large part of the general public is looking to get a new HDTV, and this Black Friday should provide an amazing number of deals.
With HDTVs, there is a very large amount on variation in quality. In many cases, the lowest-priced models on Black Friday are stripped-down models made exclusively for that retailer's sale. In many cases they lack features and the quality components used to manufacture higher priced models. That doesn't necessarily mean that these deals aren't great - it's just a case of buyer beware. You should not expect ,000 performance from a 0 HDTV.
The two primary types of flat panel HDTVs in the Black Friday ads will be LCD and Plasma. Plasma HDTVs tend to be cheaper going by cost per inch, but that is not always the case as there are some very high-end, highly rated plasma models out there. The maximum resolution of an HDTV is also something that you'll see in the ads. Most HDTVs will either be 1080p or 720p. These numbers represent the maximum lines of horizontal resolution that the TV can display at once. 1080p is the native resolution for things like Blu-ray, some video games and other sources, and being higher resolution means that these models will cost more.
On to price predictions. We fully expect to see 42" plasma and HDTVs in the 9 range this year. During the last few months on GottaDeal.com, we've posted deals for 42" HDTVs for under 0 in a few cases, so it's completely realistic to expect at least one retailer to have a deal under 0 on such a model. These cheaper HDTVs will likely be 720p and will lack features found in more expensive models. We expect prices on 50" plasma and LCD HDTVs to also fall this Black Friday, perhaps to somewhere around 9-749.
Stepping up to the full 1080p resolution will cost a little bit more, but in most cases it will be worth the extra cost when you factor in how long you will be using this HDTV and how most sources in the future (television, movies, video games) will be in native 1080p resolution. On GottaDeal.com we've posted 42" 1080p LCD HDTVs for under 0 recently, so it would not surprise us to see a 42" 1080p LCD HDTV in Black Friday ads for 9. 46" and 50" versions should be available for around 9 and 9 respectively.
Deals on smaller HDTVs (and standard TVs with the new digital tuners) will also be plentiful this year. 32" LCD HDTVs will be had for 9-399 and 37" models will be 9 or less. For those looking to replace smaller bedroom TVs with HDTVs, expect great deals on both smaller LCD HDTVs as well as standard tube TVs that now include the new digital ATSC tuners. Stores these days tend to not stock as many of these because of size constraints, but they will often make one-time purchases for Black Friday, so expect something like a 20" TV with digital tuner in the -99 range.
While Black Friday is a great time to buy the loss-leader, lower-end HDTVs, if you are looking for a deal on a higher quality, name-brand HDTV, the best time to buy is typically in early to mid-December as retailers ramp up the deals to get those last minute sales before the holidays. And even if you miss those deals, the pre-Super Bowl TV deals are also very attractive.
Laptops and Desktops:
One of the biggest hot Black Friday ad items traditionally has been the ultra-cheap laptop. However times have changed drastically in the last few years. Back in 2005, the thought of a 9 laptop made grown men drool with anticipation. However as component and manufacturing costs have dropped, it's not all that uncommon to see a 9 laptop in a Sunday ad any week of the year, or offered at online retailers such as Dell.
The recent surge in popularity of a new wave of "netbooks" - stripped down, mini laptops with 7-10" screens - has also had a big impact on the overall laptop market and the deals we can expect on Black Friday this year. Desktop computers, while still popular, are not as "sexy" as they've been in the past. They have become almost disposable because of price drops and the fact that it doesn't take much in terms of features to handle what 99% of the general public uses a desktop for in their daily lives.
If you are considering purchasing a laptop on Black Friday this year, we can't stress enough how important it is to decide what features you need and what you will be using the laptop for. There will be cheap laptops, but if they don't fit your needs, as good of a deal they may seem on the surface, you will end up disappointed soon after you purchase it. Questions to consider: what size screen do you need? Is weight an important factor? What about battery life? Do you need to be able to burn DVDs on the laptop? Some parts of the laptop (such as RAM memory) can always be upgraded later on, but other components such as screen size, battery life and processor are usually permanent.
The "classic" Black Friday laptop the last few years has had a 15.4" widescreen LCD display, a low-level dual-core processor, 2GB of memory, 160GB hard drive and usually a combo CD-RW/DVD drive, along with standard features such as WiFi, modem and ethernet port. Laptops like these have been available all year long from retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City and Staples for as low as 9. Therefore we predict we'll see this level of laptop in Black Friday ads for around 9 this year. We'll also predict an upgraded model with a faster Core 2 Duo processor, 3-4GB of RAM, DVD burner and larger hard drive for 9, and maybe less.
As for the new "netbooks", we expect those to also be discounted on Black Friday, as retailers will use the ultra-low prices to "shock" the average consumer who wasn't aware that these laptops even existed. We've posted deals on GottaDeal.com during the year for these netbooks for as low as 9. As with regular laptops, these mini machines vary greatly in specs and features. We expect to see the cheapest of these netbooks for around 9 this Black Friday, but there will be deals on models with better features. Realize that these are not meant to be your primary machine. They are great for light tasks such as web browsing and e-mail, but the small screen size and smaller keyboard make long-term use uncomfortable.
Desktop computers will continue to sell, however we're reaching the point of diminishing returns as any budget desktop bought last Black Friday will be just as good as most advertised this year. For 99% of daily tasks (internet, e-mail, homework, office work), it doesn't take more than a low-end desktop to handle these tasks. This year we expect a mid-level desktop (dual core processor, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, DVD burner) bundled with a 19" or 20" LCD monitor to be in the 9 range. Upgrade to a faster processor, more RAM, bigger hard drive and a 22" monitor for 0 more.
We predict computer peripherals to be hotter this year than in previous years. Expect hot deals on LCD monitors - we are expecting 19" monitors for -79 and 22" models for possibly as low as . 24" models should be around 9 as well. With Blu-ray being the next-generation format winner, we expect some nice deals on both internal and external Blu-ray drives for PCs. Expect internal drives for and external for 9. As with every Black Friday, expect a lot of deals on things like external hard drives, flash drives and mice/keyboard sets. These items always sell well on Black Friday and we expect those trends to continue this year.
GPS Systems:
GPS navigation systems were huge last year during Black Friday and we expect much of the same this year. There hasn't been much new innovation since last year, but prices have continued to drop as new models have been released. Garmin and TomTom have been the cream of the crop as far as sales and popularity this past year, with brands such as Magellan, Navigon and Nextar in the next class. We've posted deals all year on GottaDeal.com for GPS systems below 0. We expect to see a budget GPS system with 3.5" LCD display for this year, and more name-brand, feature-loaded models for under 0.
With GPS systems, we recommend reading as many reviews as possible from current owners before choosing a model. You'll also want to investigate if it is possible to update the maps on the device, and what that will cost you. Many of the budget, no-name models will not have this ability. With GPS systems, we firmly believe that if you are willing to pay an extra -75, you can get a lot more features and you'll be much happier with your purchase down the line.
Audio & Video:
Since last Black Friday, Blu-ray has won the next-generation format war over HD-DVD, and therefore we expect some nice deals on Blu-ray players and movies on Black Friday. Recent comments from the Blu-ray industry leaders indicated that while prices won't be slashed dramatically, we fully expect Blu-ray players to appear in at least one Black Friday ad for 9. Buy 1 Get 1 Free deals on Blu-ray movies are also predicted to help speed up the adoption of this new media format.
Along with Blu-ray, home theater systems will also be popular as retailers attempt to get those consumers who are purchasing a new HDTV to make it a complete home theater by adding a receiver and speakers. Budget 5.1 channel home theater systems should be listed in Black Friday ads for as low as .00. Add an integrated DVD player for . As with most electronics, you get what you pay for with these systems. In most cases you are better off using the built-in speakers in your TV instead of buying one of these cheap home theater systems.
iPods and MP3 players are always a hot seller on Black Friday. Apple recently introduced new versions of their popular iPods. In most cases, retailers cannot advertise iPods at prices lower than the standard MSRP, so expect to see promotions such as free accessories, free iTunes cards or free store gift cards with the purchase of these music players. Accessories for iPods are also expected to see big price cuts. This includes items such as alarm clocks, docking speaker systems, automotive accessories, cases and headphones. Deals on MP3 players from manufacturers such as SanDisk, Creative, Archos, Samsung, Sony and others should be attractive as they continue their futile attempt to gain market share from Apple.
Cameras, Camcorders & Digital Frames:
While a few years ago digital cameras were a huge Black Friday item, these days nearly everyone has one and so it takes more than just a cheap price to get people to open their wallets. As one of the most popular online deal sites, we believe digital camera deals are usually better during the year than they are on Black Friday. While going through the ads each year, we always notice cameras on "sale" for prices much more than they can be ordered online. So if you are considering a digital camera, we suggest you follow our online deals instead of relying on Black Friday.
Digital camcorders are becoming a little more popular as features are added and both prices and sizes are reduced. The new wave of compact HD-capable camcorders are very popular, but we expect prices to keep them from being a big hit this year. Next year, however, we expect HD camcorders to be a huge Black Friday seller once prices have dropped. You can expect to see entry-level, no-name HD camcorders in Black Friday ads this year for around , but we'd strongly advise against getting one of these cheaper models as the quality will not be acceptable. Standard MiniDV camcorders will be in the ads starting at around 9 for name-brand models, and those would be a better choice until name-brand HD camcorder prices drop.
Digital picture frames hit mainstream last year and it seemed like every store had at least one in their ad, regardless of if they were an electronics store or not. Prices on these have fallen drastically as well. We've posted deals on GottaDeal.com during the last few months for under for digital frames. In the ads this year we expect 5" frames for , 7" frames for and 10" frames for . The matching digital photo viewer keychains will also be advertised, probably for as low as . Again with these, you get what you pay for.

We can't stress enough that to get the best deals on Black Friday or any other day of the year, you have to check online first. Today marks the one year anniversary of an Indiana home builder demolishing a deserving familyâ??s mold-infested dwelling for ABCâ??s â??Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.â? Only 106 hours later, the Cowan-Brown family joined Ty Pennington in yelling those famous words, â??Move that bus!â? just before the family captured their first glimpse of their new home, built by Hallmark Homes and thousands of community volunteers, including American Idol winner, David Cook.
â??Itâ??s hard to believe itâ??s only been a year since we were selected for this life-changing project,â? says Paul Schwinghammer, president of Hallmark Homes. â??A day hasnâ??t gone by that I havenâ??t thought of the experience we had helping the Cowan-Brown family and organizing thousands of eager volunteers while racing against the clock to finish in time. It was a humbling testament to how giving Hoosiers are.â?
The Cowan-Brown family desperately needed a new home that was free of an extreme mold infestation, but Andy and Heather Cowan were unable to rebuild their home on their own, as they were already struggling to support their four children on wages earned as factory workers. Their youngest child, Kori, battles a congenital blood disease, which was aggravated by the environmental conditions in the familyâ??s former home, and had already received 17 invasive operations before Ty Pennington knocked on the familyâ??s door last October.
This summer, Kori underwent another surgery, but this time she was able to come home to a place of peace and healing. â??This time it was different,â? says Heather Cowan in a recent thank-you letter to Hallmark Homes, â??there was no keeping her quarantined from parts of the house that wouldnâ??t let her heal. It was a wonderful thing just to be able to focus on her.â?

LG's New Scarlet LG80 LCD TV Resonates with Audio Lovers

LG Electronics(LG), a leading player in the global flat panel display market, today announced the launch of its new LCD TV LG80, which is specially designed as an ideal home theatre TV with superb sound system and unparalleled picture quality.
LG80 is part of LG's continuing Scarlet series, along with the LG60 and LG70, and has carefully tuned speakers that automatically slide out of the side of the set when it is turned on. This feature not only adds a bit more excitement to LG's high performance TV, it also helps improve sound quality. LG incorporated a 3.1-channel virtual surround sound system into the LG80, creating an immersive experience without the need for external speakers.
"We developed the LG80 based on insights that we found from customer surveying. The results indicated that customers want a TV that delivers more than just great picture quality. They also want a TV with superb sound quality," said Simon Kang, head of LG Digital Display Company. "We expect this TV to really resonate with young people who like to entertain friends at home while watching movies and sports or playing video games. It also has the features requested by people upgrading from older CRT or projection sets to flat panel TVs."
High Sound Quality:
At the heart of the LG80's sound system lies a 3.1-channel virtual surround sound system, fully incorporated into the TV itself. This represents a major step forward in built-in TV sound. Most TVs can only play two audio channels without adding an external receiver and additional speakers. Stereo has been the standard for a long time, but LG took this a step further, giving it 50 watts of output, compared to 20 watts for most TVs.
A total of four speakers make up the system. Extending from either side of the TV are the right and left channel speakers, which help create a sense of space. In the middle is a center channel speaker dedicated to sound in the human vocal range, which makes it easier understand conversations and dialogue. A woofer, located on the back of the TV, enhances bass, making music sound fuller and allowing viewers to feel the action in hard-hitting sports and movies.
The entire sound system was tuned to perfection by renowned audio expert Mr. Mark Levinson. Even at its maximum volume there is no clipping and no distorted sound, thanks to LG's unsurpassed technology. The Scarlet LG80 is also equipped with LG's Clear Voice technology, which eliminates problems with hearing human voices over background noise in movies mixed for 5.1 channel surround sound. The Clear Voice feature alters the sound balance to emphasize human voices, reducing the background noise.
Unique Design:
The LG80 is designed along the same sleek lines as LG's other Scarlet series TVs, the LG60 and LG70. These TVs blend superior technology with exciting design to create masterpieces that are changing the way that people look at TVs and experience television sound.
The Scarlet LG80's speakers slide out from either side of the TV when it is turned on, revealing their alluring scarlet shade. The smiling LG logo and soft red frame which includes channel and volume buttons make the TV feel much warmer and a welcome addition to any living room.
By hiding the speakers when the TV is turned off, LG took design to another level, helping to create harmony with the rest of the room.
Smart Technology:
The Scarlet LG80 brings viewers the highest resolution available, with 1080p full HD providing extremely sharp image quality. A 30,000:1 contrast ratio means brighter whites, deeper blacks and more vibrant colors overall.
The Scarlet LG80 is a true multimedia TV with three AV modes that optimize the TV's picture for movies, video games or sports by a single click of a remote control.
With a USB 2.0 connection, it is easy to access to MP3 files and connect a memory card reader to the TV and create an onscreen slideshow from JPEG files or watch digital video files, a feature unique to LG. Two HDMI 1.3 ports allow for fully digital video and audio connections for devices like DVD players, cable boxes and game consoles. This eliminates any interference like color banding and creates a deeper, more vivid image.

The effectiveness of radar speed signs at slowing traffic and increasing school zone safety was underscored at a traffic safety workshop presented last week by Information Display Company. Speaking to a group of safety professionals, IDC president Gary ODell shared findings contained in a recent Safe Kids USA report that underscores the role that driver distractions can have on accidents.
The report, entitled Distracted Drivers In School Zones, includes a number of statistics that show how even small distractions can dramatically increase the chance of an accident. The report also includes findings from a Safe Kids USA-sponsored study that directly examines the issue of driver distractions in school zones. In that study, one in six drivers traveling through an active school zone was observed in a state of distraction.
â??With the increased use of cell phones, GPS systems, music players and other devices, driver distraction has become a real concern,â? said ODell. â??That is why radar speed signs remain one of the most effective means of slowing cars.â?
According to ODell, radar speed signs increase school zone safety by refocusing driver attention away from distractions and back to his or her current rate of speed. And unlike flashing lights or other attention-grabbing strategies, radar speed signs have proven to remain effective years after first being installed.
ODell highlighted statistics in the report that quantified the effects of driver distraction. According to that data, a car traveling on a dry road at 33 mph requires an overall breaking distance of approximately 104 feet. An additional 33 feet of stopping distance is required for each second the driver is distracted.
â??This again highlights the value that radar speed signs have in decreasing speeds in and around school zones,â? said ODell. â??When an accident does occur, the severity of the accident is directly related to the speed at impact. Reducing a vehicle-pedestrian crash speed from 30 mph to 20 mph decreases the likelihood of any resulting fatality from 45 percent to 5 percent.â?

To date, the following in-studio guests have been: Akron Public Schools Superintendent- Dr. Sylvester Small, Akron Urban League President- Bernett L. Keepers of the Art also teaches classes via the H.E.L.P Workshop- designed for educators who are looking for a unique way to culturally connect to the diverse youth they serve. The creation of H.E.L.P. came out of a desire to use the influence of Hip Hop music on the 21st century student, to promote student interest in reading and strengthen their abilities in all five areas of literacy: phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, comprehension, writing and fluency.
The Hip-Hop Generation and the Need for New Leadership: This workshop will delve into the current state of Black leadership in America. Additionally, students will understand how hip-hop culture is the most influential, and the only universal social phenomenon in the American marketplace. With this being said, it is imperative for the next generation of leaders to understand its past and present power in order to effectively use it to influence political, economic and social policy.
Hip-Hop v. Rap - A Historical Perspective: This workshop offers an historical perspective of Hip-Hop culture from its conception to present day. The elements of the culture will be highlighted and explored. Additionally, we will break down the love-hate-love relationship between hip-hop and American society. Lastly we will discuss and explore the un-seen corporate forces that are negatively influencing Hip-Hop Culture.
The Dwindling Number of Men of Color on College Campuses: This workshop explores the crisis of the shortage of men of color in institutions of higher education. Along the way, we will spotlight social barriers that have and continue to impede these young men from achieving academic excellence. Lastly, recommendations and solutions will be introduced in order to empower our young men to overcome these social barriers.
Young Genius Program: A collaborative mentoring effort between Gov. Strickland's Initiative To Increase The Graduation Rate, Akron Public Schools, The Akron Urban League and H.E.L.P. The Young Genius Program seeks to provide socially relevant, holistic approaches to academic, socio-economic and cultural improvement.
Facilitated by Keepers of the Art, Inc., the program consists of four components: Violence Prevention & Gangs (Anger Management-Conflict Resolution-You and the Law-The System-Violence-Community Panel Discussion), Negative & Positive Images in Hip Hop & the Media (History-The Message-Bling Bling-Video Girls-The Media-What's Good), H.E.L.P. (the Hip Hop Educational Literacy Project), and Financial Literacy (Setting Financial Goals-Understanding Credit-Savings Strategies-Managing Debt). Classes are conducted at The Akron Urban League, currently for ninth grade students in various Akron Public Schools.

Signatec Releases Its PCIe-Based PX1500-2, One of Industryâ??s Most Affordable 2-Channel, 1.5 GHz Per Channel High-Speed Digitizers

Signatec Inc. today released the PX1500-2, the most advanced PCIe-based wideband A/D board on the market. The PX1500-2 captures two synchronized analog channels at sampling rates up to 1.5 GHz, or one channel up to 3 GHz when interleaving the ADC data. 1 GB of on-board memory configured as a large FIFO and a PCIe x8 bus ensures Signatecâ??s PX1500-2 can continuously sustain long recordings at up to 1.4 GB/s through the PCIe x8 bus (both mechanical and electrical) to PC disk storage without any break in the analog record.
The PX1500-2 can be set up to use either a transformer-coupled front end or an amplifier connection. The transformer connection can only be set for AC-coupled operation and has a frequency capture range of 5 MHz to 2 GHz. The amplifier can be set for either AC-coupled or DC-coupled operation with a frequency range of up to 1 GHz.
â??Like the PX1500-4, the PX1500-2 was designed to maximize the quality of captured signals in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and spurious-free dynamic range over a very wide frequency range,â? said Anthony Hunt, Chief Technology Officer at Signatec. â??However, the PX1500-2 was further designed as an ideal solution to create affordable radar, mass spectroscopy, medical imaging and non-destructive testing systems.â?
Precise Sampling Rate Flexibility
Beyond its high-speed, multi-channel performance capabilities, the PX1500-2â??s frequency synthesized clock allows the ADC sampling rate to be set to virtually any value from 200 MHzâ??the minimum allowable ADC clockâ??up to 1500 MHz, offering maximum flexibility for sampling rate selection. Additional divide-by-2 circuits are provided for sampling at even lower frequencies. This frequency selection flexibility comes at no cost to the acquisition clock quality/performance when locked to either the onboard 10 MHz, 5 PPM reference clock or to an externally provided 10 MHz reference clock. The ADC may also be clocked from an external clock source.
This level of accurate clock tuning without sacrificing performance gives the best integrated onboard ADC clock flexibility in the industry. Users no longer need to settle for fixed clocks or limiting divide-by-2 clocks only. This feature is ideal for undersampling applications, where the Nyquist bands need to be perfectly tuned to optimally place the center frequency of the sampled signal into the middle of the Nyquist zone and to optimize for the total bandwidth or data captured.
Up to three PX1500-2 boards may be interconnected in a Master/Slave configuration via a ribbon cable that connects at the top of the boards. In this configuration, the clock and trigger signals from the Master drive the Slave boards so that data sampling on all boards occurs simultaneously. Up to 18 boards can be set up for fully synchronized operation by utilizing the SYNC1500-6 as the clock and trigger source for six master boards, where all 18 boards can function synchronously even when placed into different PC chassis. This scalability of chassis and system resources allows for increasing the sustained data rate per channel for high speed signal recording and/or real-time processing applications.

UV TV: From Lady Gaga to Fighting Gravity, Wildfire Inc. Ultraviolet Effects and Lighting Enhance VMA Awards and America's Got Talent Broadcasts

Wildfire Inc. [http://www.wildfirefx.com ultraviolet fixtures and UV paint effects were key components of the lighting design for two recent national television broadcasts: the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA Awards, staged Sept 12 at the Nokia Theater, showcasing the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Eminem) and Season Five of the NBC hit America's Got Talent (UV paint effects for the act Fighting Gravity).
In both cases, Wildfire worked closely with lighting and show designers to help them choose the product that would achieve their creative vision within the unique requirements of the presentation format. "The use of Wildfire UV lighting and effects in these two live TV performances shows their versatility for broadcast and theatrical events, and some of the many ways they can be used in lighting, costume, set and production design," says Wildfire president John Berardi.
VMA Awards: large and bright
As part of the VMA Awards lighting design mix, 30 Wildfire 400 watt Long Throw floods were employed for their power to illuminate large areas (The 7,100-seat Nokia Theater stage is 180 x 80 feet, said to be the largest in Southern California) and hold their own as a distinct visual element in the brightly lit television environment. "The VMA Awards designers put together an impressive stage, achieving vivid color and surreal effects with an equipment package that included moving lights, projection and the Wildfire Long Throws," says John Berardi.
Fighting Gravity: hard work, dreams and good lighting
On America's Got Talent, Wildfire's UV paints were integral to dance troupe Fighting Gravity's production design. Fighting Gravity bills itself as "a black-light illusion performance." The group, made up of Virginia Tech students, goes on to state that "by competing on America's Got Talent, Fighting Gravity wants to inspire others by showing that through hard work, determination, and some good lighting, anybody can accomplish their dreams."
Wildfire products are essential to Fighting Gravity's living up to its name. Says Berardi, "The performers seem literally to fly and float through the air through coordinating their actions with the interaction of UV lighting and Wildfire UV paints - used on fabrics, props and scenics in a way that highlights certain elements while making others invisible." Although it did not win the America's Got Talent competition, Fighting Gravity was selected as a favorite act and starting Oct 1 has embarked on a 25-city tour across the nation with other favorites of Season Five.
Other recent Wildfire projects include Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and the Glow Festival in Santa Monica.
Wildfire Inc. will exhibit at two upcoming trade events: the LDI show for the lighting and theater industry in Las Vegas Oct 22-24 (booth 2406) and the IAAPA show for the themed entertainment and amusement park industry in Orlando Nov 15-19 (booth 671).
